Stage 738 – Lisbon to Porto Alto

Back in Europe and ready to embark on the final leg of the journey, Around The World sets out from Libson Airport heading north alongside the Mar da Palha which hosts the Tagus River that flows into it from the north. The airport sits high above the city and that offers the luxury of a downhill start before a lumpy flat profile kicks in from around four miles.

The rollout leaves the terminal building and loops left then right onto the Avenida de Berlim before running through parklands left and right then hanging a left at the Praca Baden Powell roundabout onto the Rua Contra-Almirante Armando-Ferraz highway heading north. A couple of left/rights and looping intersections later, the journey north continues past the districts of Portela and Moscavide to Sacavem at three miles where the road crosses over the Rio Trancao river: it flows west to east into Mar da Palha.

The route continues on north, passing through Povoa de Santa Iria at eight miles and Forte da Casa a mile later. All of this time, the profile is relatively flat with only minor undulations to deal with. The road passes by the islands of Mouchao da Povoa and Mouchao de Alhandra out in the Tagus River, and it’s shortly after the second of those, at Vila Franca de Xira, that the route hangs a right onto the EN10 Highway which crosses the Tagus River onto its eastern bank. The finish is on a flat marshy area approaching Porto Alto on a straight run east. On the run in, after crossing the Tagus, the road also crosses several other streams and smaller rivers that together form the Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve on the eastern side of the Tagus River.
