Stage 68 is an uphill grind with bits of downhill in it: but because the descents are over so quickly, it just feels like you’re climbing all the time.
The first climb kicks in almost immediately and goes on for five miles, cresting at the village of Greblo. The mile long descent takes you down to the River Velikaya where guess what, you start climbing again. The false summit of the second climb is where the road crosses the Moscow-Riga railway line. The main summit is at the turn off to Zales, which sits a mile from the main road.
In what might be described as an undulating mid section of the stage, you pass by Yasnaya Polnaya at fourteen miles, followed immediately by Lake Berozno and the town of Bakonovo.
Koklino is the highest point of the stage, reached at eighteen miles, before yet another lumpy section sets up the final three mile climb through the forest to the finish just after Pushtoshka.
