Around The World In 800 Days arrived in Russia with an average ascent of 497 feet per stage. It will leave it, after stage 238, with an average of 676 feet. Some tough days lie ahead, and by way of an introduction, the first full day in Russia is a bit of a slog.
There’s basically no flat stuff on stage 67. It starts off going downhill past Zasitino and Voluyevobut either side of the one mile mark then kicks viciously uphill after crossing the Reka Issa river after a couple of miles. A lumpy climb continues after the initial summit before descending to Gornyaya next to Lake Zalosemskoye at eight miles. That’s followed by a junction linking the north/south route 58K-557 at Puchnino a mile later and that in turn leads into an undulating, meandering ride alongside the edge of a forest, passing close by Lake Ostrovenskoye before flashing through the village of Zharkovo just after the halfway kite.
The undulations continue until road arrives at Lake Alatovichi at eighteen miles where the M9 autoroute swings clockwise around the northern side of the lake. That signals the start of the second major climb of the day: the road cuts through the forest before emerging adjacent to Lake Beloye at twenty two miles. The last three miles are essentially downhill which makes for a frantic finish, but after all that has gone before, it makes for a nice experience.
