Stage 632 – New York Mills to Wadena

Stage 632 heads south east into the heart of Minnesota, leaving behind much of the water that characterised the previous two stages. That’s not to say that there isn’t water of course, because there is: it’s just that there’s less of it and the lakes are smaller and hence less deserving of names. The stage is relatively flat but gets labelled as a descender by virtue of a gentle lumpy first half and a river crossing just after halfway.

The rollout’s flat and straight to just before two miles where a short up/down interrupts the flow. Then it’s flat to four miles where Windy Lake sits on the left hand side of the road and the town of New York Mills on the right. Highway 10 loops around the northern side of New York Mills before swinging back left/right and straight at five miles for the long mile lumpy descent to the left hander just short of Bluffton at ten miles. There, the road crosses over a stream that runs into Bluff Creek on the left hand side of the road before passing through Bluffton itself then crossing the Leaf River at twelve miles. Unsurprisingly, that’s the lowest elevation of the stage.

There’s a climb after the crossing as the highway slides between ridges left and right of the road then it’s straight and relatively flat all the way to Wadena at sixteen miles where ATW hangs a right in the middle of town, leaving Highway 10 and heading south on Highway 71 instead. After the turn, the road climbs gently before falling away again ahead of a second dig at the climb kicks on eighteen miles and that one continues gently on all the way to the finish near to the junction with County Road 100.
