It’s all heading in the right direction: a couple more stages and ATW will be in Minnesota! 622’s a great stage: flat as a pancake for the first thirteen miles, then a little skip up the way before a five mile descent down to the finish, and virtually all of it heading east, which is good.
The rollout is ever so slightly uphill, if you can actually call ten feet of ascent in a mile ‘uphill’. That takes Highway 2 past the small town of Mapes and onto a five mile straight that runs flat for five miles to a loop around the southern perimeter of Michigan City. Out the other side of the loop, as the road runs between and across several small lakes by causeways, it’s straight for another three miles to 118th Avenue NE, after which the road bends right into Petersburg at twelve miles.
At fourteen miles, just north of Deer Lake, the road starts climbing (the only significant climb on the whole stage) the summit of which is between two bunches of water at the junction of 124th Avenue NE. From there, it’s downhill all the way to the finish east of Niagra at the junction of 46th Street NE.
