The southerly run continues as ATW runs parallel with the Minnesota state border, some forty miles to the west heading towards Stump Lake, which itself is still over fifty miles away in the north eastern sector of North Dakota. The stage is a descender, although two hundred feet of descent is hardly going to set any speed records: nevertherless it is mainly downhill and the stage will be something of a powerfest.
The rollout is downhill for two miles to the junction of 78th Street NE and Hampden Road where the road rises briefly before resuming the long lumpy descent. The next major junction is County Highway 9 at six miles: it runs east/west linking Derrick with Fairdale either side of Highway 1. After that the next junction, which links Edmore with Adams in similar fashion, is State Highway 17 at ten miles.
The road bends left at County Highway 22A at thirteen miles then right again half a mile later at 104th Avenue NE. It then skips between two small lakes before making a more significant left between more lakes at seventeen miles. The road then climbs for a mile, probably the most significant but small rise on the stage, to Lawton where the highway hangs another right for the straight two mile run in to the finish next to a small lake in the middle of nowhere.
