The New South Wales leg of Around The World is now over three quarters of the way to the Queensland border: Goondiwindi, which sits just across the border on the Queensland side, is now only five stages away, including this one: and there are only fifteen stages left in Australia itself. But let’s focus first on stage 417 which runs directly north away from Narrabri towards Bellata, Gurley and ultimately Moree.
The rollout is lumpy and uphill for a mile, bending right, then left, then right again before straightening up again past Killarney State Conservation Area. The road descends at the beginning of the straight before climbing steeply at the other end where the Newell Highway swings back left at five miles. The lumpy stuff continues to six miles before a gentle descent kicks in and it takes the A39 to Edgeroi at nine miles.
The road then climbs gently again, passing the junctions of Caroona Lane, Galathera Lane and Byalla Lane before descending to cross Ten Mile Creek at fourteen miles. The highway climbs gently again thereafter, rising to just over eight hundred feet by the junction with Valorban Lane at twenty miles. However that’s the last of the climbing done for the stage and the three miles to the finish are downhill, the stage finishing just before the crossing of Myall Hollow Creek south of Bellata.
