“What goes up must come down” or so the old saying goes. Well not just yet. Around The World may be heading north east and homing in on Port Augusta (it’s just two stages away) but stage 351 still manages to climb more than it descends, although to be fair both numbers are under three hundred feet so it’s really a flattish lumpy stage.
The rollout from the middle of nowhere descends for a mile before the road kicks upwards for the next three miles. Over the top, there’s a descent down to Gilles Downs at eight miles where the Eyre Highway bends slightly left. The road then climbs steeply for three miles, peaking at the junction to Cooyerdoo at eleven miles. That’s followed by a rapid descent to Pine Creek at fifteen miles, the lowest elevation of the stage, and that marks the start of the final meandering climb around the north side of Iron Knob, finishing on the north eastern side of the town at six hundred feet above sea level.
