Stage 336 – Wahgunyah to Fowlers Bay

Once you see the route profile of this stage, you’ll be disappointed that it’s not the elevation profile, especially the first half. But in actual fact there are some similarities in that the first ten miles are lumpy and downhill whereas the second half would have been lumpy and and flat had it not been for a nasty climb between miles fifteen and eighteen.

The rollout is lumpy up and down along the Eyre Highway heading south east across open scrub towards Nundroo. There’s a short sharp descent at three miles before the undulations resume, then a longer, more pronounced descent kicks in at six miles: it flattens out at ten miles at the Nundroo Motel on the south eastern side of the town.

At twelve miles, the road re-enters the Yalata Indigenous Protected Area on a sweeping left hander that sees the highway revert to a straight easterly direction. Shortly after that, the road passes through Pintumba at fourteen miles where dirt roads head north and south out into the outback. The remainder of the stage is practically straight, but the main feature of the straight is the climb that kicks on from fifteen miles. With the road being straight, you’ll see the climb becoming ever steeper in front of your eyes before cresting the summit at eighteen miles.

There’s then a lumpy two mile descent followed by a dive down to almost sea level by twenty miles, after which the last four miles are a gentle climb followed by a fast descent to the finishing line.
