Stage 250 – Bayan to Umbiin Tsagaan

Here’s a downhill stage with a twist: it’s got more than three hundred feet of climbing in it. But the reality is that it descends over two hundred feet more than it climbs so it does go down as a stage with some respite in it. In terms of the geography, it’s a south easterly run down towards the intersection of Tov province, Dundgovi province and Govisumber province. The whole of stage 250 remains in Tov province but stage 251 visits all three. It’s a lumpy flat rollout for a mile before the gentle descent kicks in, and the undulations to nine miles see the elevation drop by a couple of hundred feet even though the road keeps rising back up again. The short sharp rise at ten miles brings with it a brief change of direction on a left hand bend but by eleven miles, the descent resumes on a long curving right hander that continues almost all the way to the finish.

The descent remains gentle to twenty miles where the railway deviates away from the road for the first time at a sharp descent and climb in the elevation profile, the railway taking a longer detour to avoid the worst of the gradient. Once up the other side of the climb, the road hangs a left and the railway rejoins the road ahead of a straight run down to the lowest elevation of the stage at four thousand two hundred meters. Then from the lowest point, it’s a fifty foot climb up the finish just over a mile further along the road.
