Stage 177 – Novaya Chebula to Acha

This stage is like putting a mirror next to the map profile and seeing the elevation profile in the reflection. It’s seriously uncanny how perfectly opposite they are, event at the points where the hills kick in and end.

The trend of the route map is north easterly, although the road does meander left and left as it makes its way in and out of the forests. The elevation profile also meanders up and down as it descends over most of the stage.

The rollout is initially uphill as the Avtodoroga Baykal highway swings left then right out of the gate. The first mile is steep and uphill: indeed the first four miles are uphill. That’s followed by a shallow descent to Chakhlovo at seven miles where the road crosses the railway line coming down from the north.

That’s followed by a five mile curving straight that hangs slightly to the left as it approaches Bolotnoye at fifteen miles. That’s the signal for a second long straight, this time four miles, before a long right hander keeps you in the woods just as the road threatened to exit the forest. There’s still time for one final left hander at twenty one miles, that sits at the top of a sharp climb, to set you up for the final run in to the finish just north of Achinskiy. The final half mile is steeply uphill so it’s advisable not to burn your legs too soon on this one.
