Stage 109 – Chirshi to Bol’shaya

Having crossed the Vyatka river at the end of stage 108, stage 109 was bound to start with a bang, and so it proves. The initial climb is just a mile and a hundred feet straight out of the pen before a rolling uphill section over the next four miles add a further fifty feet. There’s a tiny bit of respite as the road dips down to cross a stream that feeds into the Tanayka river at six miles before a much steeper climb kicks in. Starting as the highway passes by Kosteneyevskoe, this ascent gains four hundred feet to the junction to Mortovskoye in the north at ten miles. There’s then a short dip as the M77 approaches the Nizhnyaya national park before another short rise takes you to Lekarevskoye at sixteen miles.

There’s a long descent down from Lekarevskoye and the road passes by a junction that splits off to Yelabuga to the south at twenty miles. The M77 takes the northern route at the intersection, heading for Bol’shekachkinskoye, and ultimately the finish.

The descent bottoms out at a further crossing of the Tanayka river at twenty one miles before the all too familiar climb towards the finish begins two miles from the line. The climb is a tester at a hundred and fifty feet in just over a mile before the road flattens out again in the lead up to the line.
