After the pain of the previous outing, stage 102 offers something altogether more palatable to the legs. It features a long downhill start followed by a two mile climb, a five mile descent that accelerates the further you get into it, then the major climb of the day, a three hundred footer stretching out over two miles: that delivers you to seventeen miles and seven to go. Thereafter, there’s a short down and up before a final five mile descent rolls you down to the finish.
The rollout from Andreyevo-Bazarskoye is pretty much straight for seven miles, and it’s gently downhill. Expect a madhouse from the off. After the descent bottoms out as the road crosses the river Sredniy Anish, the first severe climb takes you up to Yemetkinskoye. Part way down the descent after the right hander, the gradient steepens significantly past the junction for Reshetnikovo down to the crossing of the river Belaya Volozhka. The road runs alongside the river for a couple of miles but once it hangs a right past Urazmet’yevo at fifteen miles, the climbing starts again and this time it’s a real tester.
The climb crests at Kozlovka at seventeen miles but in geographical terms, the highlight of the stage is at twenty miles where the M7 crosses from the Chuvashia Republic into the Republic of Tatarstan: indeed it’s that boundary that marks the start of the long gradual descent down to the finish at Bol’sheachasyrsskoye.
